Year 1840: Calder was already an orphan in his earliest memories. He was rasied by his "uncle" Tucker, though he was never clear if the man was related or just took him in out of some unspoken obligation. Tucker was a violent drunkard who got into massive debt with Xanthus' Mafia.
Year 1846: Eventually paying for a second mouth to feed was too much for Tucker. He dumped a six-year-old Calder on the doorstep of teh Temple of the Heavenly Host (this being shortly after it was relocated to Shade's Run). This gave him a healthy respect for those who have nothing and a high dislike of those who would sacrifice anything for their own pleasure. He also gained a new respect for the church itself - they taught him to read, write and gave him every opportunity to become who he wanted to be. He began to think of the whole institution as his new family.
Year 1848: The moment he was old enough to take place in society, he chose to squire himself to a knight. He wanted to protect those he loved.
Year 1852: When he finished his training he decided to become a Holy Knight. While many knights (and priests) tended to favor a particular God or Angel, he was merely a devotee to the whole concept of the Heavenly Host and saw no reason to limit his appreciation to just one part of it. He was so dedicated that he became a knight at a mere 12 years old (the common age for graduation as a knight is roughly 15).
Year 1854: His first assignments were not what he expected. He hoped to be saving people or protecting them from evil - instead he was assigned to monitor a mage named Irene Merryweather. He quickly learned his office was being used as an instrument to enforce the Crown's fear of mages, innocent people who had done nothing wrong but study magic the way he did the blade. Worse, the entire nation became swept up in the craze of it.
Year 1855: Thankfully the conflict ends a year later, allowing him to actually become a kngiht of the Temple isntead of a police for whatever mages they wished to assign him to. However, the experience leaves him sympathetic to mages in a way most people might otherwise not be.
Year 1859: Calder is assigned another mage protection job, but this time it is because she is a target of the Cult of Asoth and working to undermine a plot of theirs. Also working with them, since a young child was caught in the cross fire, were the knights Marek and Kris - the latter hit it off nicely with Calder as they were birds of a feather. While the entire incident didn't go as desired, Phaedria (the mage he was assigned to) did get out of it alive and they stopped the Cult - more than one can ask for usually.
