Year 1800: He is born during the chaos of the assault on Rueden. While his sister (and many other children) are taken by the Nazcan's he is actually rescued by knights. Naturally they don't know who the child is and his parents are dead, so they passed him off to a local priest to be taken to an orphanage for care. The only thing the child has from his past is one of his mother's earrings - a cross. The priests start nicknaming him "the cross child", which eventually just becomes Cross.
Year 1803: He is transfered to Whitestar orphanage in Cardinal Meridian, which was then run by Michelle Singer. While a quiet child he is often prone to violent outbursts and has a strange power over fire. This wouldn't have been odd at the time, given elemental heritage was still possible, but the boy was clearly NOT highborn! She suspected he was half-breed but he never showed any sign of a birth defect.
Year 1810: When the roma come to town he becomes infatuated with their style and way of life. In particular he likes how clannish they are. They stick together, protect one another and survive by their own wits and skills. This, to him, is much better then the "birth dictates privilige" life he's seen in the capitol. He eventually runs away from the orphanage and stays with the Moon Roma, who accept him over time. He is never treated a true roma (aka never taught their langauge) but he was a part of their family and given the respect as such even after their meger with the Sun Roma.
Year 1813 & Year 1814: Lucien overthrows the nation. Cross, for the first time, feels the urge to do "what is right" and rallies with the actual King's to over throw him. While in the army with them he meets Jean. The two are exact opposites in many ways and begin their friendship by arguing with one another. Given their calm demeanors these arguements are more like logic debates with the occaisonal sarcastic sniping here and there.
He warms up to Jean over the year together though. He finds the man has a strong sense of duty but he's still got brains enough to remember his own personal values in the process. The night before the massive seige on the capitol itself he actually gets tipsy. Jean comes to lecture him about his smoking habit (back then it was relegated to aetherian pipes) and without thinking about it Cross kisses him. The two let their passions run away with them, unsure if either of them will survive to the next day, and become lovers.
Thankfully they both survive. After, for their skills in the battle, both are given commendations by the knights. This is great for Jean, a military man at heart, but means little for Cross. He refuses to be brought into the fold, causing the two to end up a bit estranged from one another.
Once they ultimately lose contact, Cross begins to move in underground fighting rings. This takes him further and further from the capitol over time.
Year 1820: After not hearing from Jean in ages, Cross receives a letter. The Black King of Aether is dead. There is to be a military strike back and he wants Cross to help him on it.
He comes back but punches Jean instead - upset about the lack of communication for the last 6 years. Jean admits that his career took off in a major way. He began heading up a small elite group called the Legionnaires and it took so much of his attention that everything else vanished. They argue, but not for long before they become intimate again. After, Cross agrees to help but he refuses to become a knight still.
Year 1824: The two are roomates and lovers by this point, though Jean doesn't openly declare or deny them to the public given his social standing. However, in this year, everything changed. The death of Bezelneph removed the magic powers from the elves of Aether...
Except them. He and Jean still had their powers, for some strange reason. Both had come into these abilities far earlier in their life then any other elf before and now they hadn't lost them when everyone else had? This lead Jean to a decision: They had to hide what they could do. It would raise too many questions and with how badly the peopel of Aether liked to jump to witch hunts (not to mention the whole situation at current was the result of the King killing two kids with strange and scary powers) it was just too dangerous.
The two began to fight again, but this time it wasn't going to end with jokes or sex - if there was one thing Cross was not about to do it was hide any part of himself. His personal creed, the core of his being, was never to be ashamed of himself. Eventually this drove an impossible wedge between them and Cross walked away.
Year 1830: Wandering around, doing as he pleased, Cross seemed to gather a following by accident. At first it was a woman he saved that seemed enamoured with him. Then there was a group of mercenaries who found his leadership a good replacement for a recently lost leader of their own. One by one he had followers, each of which he began to assume responsability for as they went from "followers" to friends.
Year 1834: Word reaches Cross about how the supposedly dead Black King (who he so dilligently helped avenge) is a zombie and back in the nation after murdering the Queen. Just trying to say the events with a straight face was more then Cross could bear and he finally decided the whole of Aether had gone mad. He and his crew began to talk about the insanity in their kingdom, more so when it was announced that Christopher would reclaim his throne!
It was then he decided to call them "Shattered Realm". His logic was: This realm has been shattered and it is down to us to collect its peices and put it back the way it should be. His men passionately rallied behind such a noble cause, making them a gang of intensely loyal anarchists!
Year 1838: He runs into two kids, Kibo & Akira, who are lost and on the verge of starving. When they start to follow him he find himself incapable of turning a cold shoulder to them - instead he brings them to the Shattered Realm crew where they make a home for themselves.
Year 1840: Cross isn't blind to how much Kibo cares about Akira, but it isn't his place to sort their issues for them.
Year 1841: One day Akira comes back furious about how Kibo has betrayed them to some Crown boot lickers called the Legionnaires. This explains a lot of recently failed missions they've been having. While the betrayal itself doesn't shock Cross he is surprised to find the group led by his old flame is the one behind it! He has little time to focus on it though as the anti-mage legislations start stripping perfectly decent people of their rights.
He begins to send his people on missions to help get mages to one of the safer factions of their choice and to fumble knight shipments so they have less supplies to run about and make people's lives hell with.
Year1844: Akira is taken and no one in the Shattered Realm knows it until Jean brings him back.Jean dresses down and brings Akira back to Cross as a “gift”. He knows he himself cannot spend the day with Cross so he offers to give his little group back its “heart”. The two rekindle their old flame, spending a short time together ravenously before parting ways again.
Year 1845: Cross lets Taren catch him. However he asks that he be allowed to confess something important to Jean in private. Once Jean is brought in, Cross seduces him in the cell. After, Cross breaks out of the cell and Jean makes no attempt to stop him.
Year 1847: Cross takes a bad hit in a skirmish and plays it off as nothing (Faye, Akira & Noru are present). He collapses after the fight is over though. Faye goes to get a doctor while Noru tries to comfort a freaking out Akira. After, Cross comes to and the Shattered Realm have a good time tearing into him for playing macho.
Year 1853: Noru is out on a job with I’Frit and lays into the man they were after harshly. I’Frit has to stop him from killing him (since the point was only to intimidate) and hauls him back. Upon arrival Cross gets upset with him but Noru throws in his face how worthless and cowardly he thinks the realm is. Noru takes a beating and is cast out of the Shattered Realm.
A month later, Kibo is sent to escort a high priority shipment thanks to all the Shattered Realm raids. He does plenty of damage but is brought down by I’Frit & Faye who take him prisoner. Many of the gang members want revenge and to kill him, but many others remember when he was a beloved ally and aren’t so sure. Cross refuses to hurt him and instead waits it out while Akira and Kibo sort out their differences.
In Aquarius, Cerrin comes to collect Marlene. The Shattered Realm fights him off and in the process Cerrin learns that Cross is the God of Fire. He wants that power!
Year 1854: The funeral for the member is held and all of the Shattered Realm are in attendance… until they notice fires in the direction of their inn! They find citizens fleeing the scene and the Emberlight Tavern is burned beyond repair. Outraged, Cross decides he’s had enough of this city and its bullshit. Let them deal with their own crime and stupidity. He’s packing the group up to move to the capitol so they can deal with the King’s bullshit more directly.
Marlene introduces the Shattered Realm’s situation to JJ and the Lord Spiritual actually agrees to help finance their new Emberlight Tavern in the city. Cross is suspicious of why he’d help, given their agenda is against the crown.
However, Cross decides he needs to know if he can stay in this city with his enemy or not. He confronts Christopher who make it clear tht he knows he's destructive to the kingdom and make it seem he wants Cross to stop him or save him. He fights with Christopher but the King calls in the Legion - along with Jean himself.
Later, Jean and Cross discuss the aftermath of what happened in the throne room. Cross warns that if Christopher turns this into an actual fight he will kill the King. Meanwhile, Jean thinks they should try to help save Christopher instead.
Cross encounters Nayeli, she becomes curious about his aura as a shaman. When he admits he’s the God of Fire she’s conflicted since that is THE main deity of her people!
Shortly after this, a young woman enters their ranks - Emeline. While she was a spy at first, when Marlene corners her for the truth she admits she wants to join them for real. Seeing the way they were like family, it was something she never found with the Cult of Asoth. They agree to protect her and let her remain with them.
When the Slada'sha armies came from Cardrinal Meridian, he and his people stood to defend the city while the defensive grid came online. As a result, he granted his fire to all those willing to fight that day. Two captains of the black-blooded zombies arrive but the Shattered Realm (Akira, Marlene, Emeline, I’Frit & Cross) and the Legionaries (Taren, Sarias, Kibo, Jean, Fawkes & Marek) show up to take one each. Eventually the city is saved and everyone in Shade’s Run is celebrating.
Just before the years end, Odette and Nikkola come to the Emberlight Tavern seeking protection. Marlene vouches for them both as worthwhile people - particularly since Nikkola is a personal friend. A meeting is held with Odette and Nikkola pleading their case to Cross. He ultimately accepts them, mostly because they are about family and friends over personal gain.
A few days later, Cross encounters Christopher on the street and sees how much more like the man he once followed the King has now become. He gives up on his rivalry against the Crown.
Year 1855: Cross talks with Akira, I’Frit, Marlene and Emeline about how the old anarchy motivation is put to bed. It’s a new year, they need a new cause for the Shattered Realm to become devoted to.
A month later, Essence is starving when she arrives in Shade’s Run late at night. Emeline, meanwhile, has to make a very simple trash run outside of the inn. When Essence picks Emeline as a quick-and-easy bite, Emeline has to scramble to get away and get help from those in the Emberlight Tavern. After Essence has fed (and slept with) Emeline, the Shattered Realm demand to know what the deal is. Odette vouches for her and Cross ultimately accepts Essence’s tale. Emeline also gets to see just how good of friends Odette and Essence are.
Year 1857: Marlene and Emeline are out with Akira and Danielle when they are attacked by Ross and Abel – who are after Emeline. When Abel and Akira’s fire go head to head, Abel decides to take him because he’s like the child him and Ross never had! Danielle is left to get an injured Marlene and targeted Emeline out of dodge and tell the others.
When the girls tell Cross and I’Frit what happened, it’s Emeline who explains that to rescue Akira would require a trip to Vox Diablos. The cult’s church is in a pocket dimension of the Dark World though. They’d need a Keise, or A’dalis, to get there. Cross looks to I’Frit and asks if he, as an entity of Fire, can pass into otherworldly realms. When he learns he can, he decides anything his minions can do HE can to.
The Shattered Realm get to Ross and Able’s dwarf sheep farm to rescue Akira. However, when Cross tries to unleash his powers on the proceedings he is stopped by Asoth. God versus God, the two end up at an impasse. Cross is forced to back off for the sake of his people’s safety but they get Akira back.
After, Jean and Cross talk about what it means for them if those twisted bastards have a God of their own.
Year 1858: Kris hosts a little drinking knight but with an important motive. He tells his friends (Fawkes, Danielle, Danx, Ichiko, Willow, Kero, Nicholas & Alessa) and the Shattered Realm (Cross, Akira, Emeline, Marlene & I’Frit) that he intends to go back to Cardinal Meridian and kill a damned black-blooded zombie – no matter what this time. He’s tried of feeling weak and scared. (Naturally the question of why he’s hung up on this could arise, since he’s never told his childhood friends what became of Zaphir.) See if anyone wants to come with him.
Kris and company (Ichiko, Kero, Fawkes, Alessa) arrive at Cardinal Meridian. He makes another attempt but suffers another relapse (which could be interesting if any of his childhood friends come along). He breaks down, admitting he feels worthless. First he was haunted by Zaphir’s face before death, now he can add his father’s lack of respect to his trauma. Akira, Cross and many of the Shattered Realm tail him to be sure he was okay but kept out of sight - at least until it is obvious they need to jump in and save the day.
